What is World Health Day?

Started by the World Health Organization, World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7. Its goal is to bring attention to various health issues. World Health Day always has a different theme. Let’s see what was the focus last year and what is the focus now.

World Health Day 2020: Year of the Nurse and Midwife

Last year’s theme, “Support Nurses and Midwives,” was about recognizing these valuable healthcare professionals.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, healthcare workers have been under a lot of pressure. They’ve been working long hours in crowded hospitals to care for people diagnosed with coronavirus.

Want to know how you can support nurses, midwives, and all other healthcare workers?

Keep yourself healthy and stay out of the hospital during this pandemic!

Staying Healthy

We have to follow some rules to protect ourselves and others.

Stay inside

You should stay home (self-isolate) as much as possible—even if you have no symptoms—to slow the spread of this very contagious disease.

Wash your hands

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you don’t have soap and water, use hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60% alcohol. This will help remove the infectious virus from your skin.

Don’t touch your face

Always keep your hands away from your face! If the virus is on your hands when you touch your face, you might infect yourself with this respiratory disease.

Keep your distance

If you do go outside, you should practice social distancing (stay at least 2 metres away from others). When people get close together, community spread increases by helping the virus move easily from person to person.

Clean surfaces

COVID-19 can live on some surfaces for several days. Use a disinfectant to clean surfaces like countertops, door handles, light switches, taps, and remote controls.

Do your part

During this pandemic, we should all do our best to stop the spread of COVID-19. Protect yourself and those around you. We’re in this together!

World Health Day 2021: Building a fairer, healthier world for everyone

The COVID-19 pandemic has undercut recent health gains, pushed more people into poverty and food insecurity, and amplified gender, social and health inequities.

This World Health Day, the call for action is to eliminate health inequities as part of a year-long global campaign to bring people together to build a fairer, healthier world.

It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.

Mahatma Gandhi

Health inequities are not only unjust and unfair, but they also threaten the advances made to date and have the potential to widen rather than narrow equity gaps.

However, health inequities are preventable with strategies that place greater attention on improving health equity, especially for the most vulnerable and marginalized groups.

At the same time, we should demand our leaders to monitor health inequities and to ensure that all people are able to access quality health services depending on their needs and values within their communities.
