10 Ways to Say “I Love You”

Hello, welcome to another class. I’m Robin and today I’m going to talk to you about love, specifically 10 different ways to say “I love you”. So why have I chosen this topic? Because February 14th is Valentine’s Day. And this is celebrated widely in English-speaking countries and in other parts of the world as well. So I want to give you some options. Instead of just saying “I love you” to someone, there are many different ways that you can express this feeling. And not only to someone you love in a romantic way. There are many different kinds of love. And I think that on Valentine’s Day, we can celebrate all of them. So I’m going to talk about the different kinds of love. And when I give you these examples of other ways to say “I love you”, I will tell you if they apply only to romantic relationships or if they also apply in other situations. Okay. And I want to point out that in honor of Valentine’s Day, we have lots of content for you this week related to love. We have a love song from Jay. He’ll be singing and talking about the lyrics. And from Marion as well. She’ll be looking at the lyrics of some other love songs. So stay tuned for all of our Valentine’s content this week. 

So as I said, there are many different kinds of love and we can celebrate them all on Valentine’s Day. So of course, the most common one for Valentine’s Day is romantic love. So this is love with your partner, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your husband, your wife, etc. But we also have familiar love. Okay, so this is love of your family. So you love your mom, you love your dad, you love your brother, your sister, etc. Okay, so this is another kind of love, familiar love. Platonic love. So this is love of your friends. Okay? So platonic love is friendship. So you love your best friend, you love your group of friends. So it’s a different kind of love than romantic love, but it’s also a very valid one as well. And finally, self-love. So the love that we have for ourselves, and this means respect and acceptance of ourselves. So self-love is another very valid form of love. 

Okay, so now I’m going to give you these examples, my top 10 ways to say “I love you”, and I’ll tell you in which situations you can use them. Okay, number one, I adore you. Okay, if you would adore someone, it means you love them very much. So this can apply to your significant other which means your boyfriend or your girlfriend, etc, your romantic partner, but you can also say this to a friend or to a family member, I adore you. Okay, so this is kind of an honor kind of love. 

All right, my second one, I love you from the bottom of my heart. So this is a lot of love. That means that your entire heart is filled with love if you love someone from the bottom of your heart. So this can also apply to your children, to your family members to your friends. Okay, so this can apply to everyone. I love you from the bottom of my heart. 

Okay, this one is for romantic relationships only, I think. We are meant for each other. So it means we are meant to be together. So this one normally you would use in a romantic situation. We’re meant for each other. Although if you’re talking about a friendship, like we’re meant to be friends, then you could also say we’re meant for each other. 

All right, number four another romantic one. I’ve totally fallen for you. So when we talk about falling or falling for someone, it’s not literally you don’t actually fall down. To fall for someone means you fall in love or you are in love with them, you love them very much. So this you would only use in a romantic situation. 

The next one is actually two. But it’s two different ways to say the same thing. I’m crazy about you and I‘m mad about you. So crazy and mad are synonyms. And to be crazy about someone, this is another romantic one. It means that you love them so much you feel crazy or mad with your love for them. 

Okay, the next one, I’m smitten with you. So smitten is another way to say that you are very attracted to someone, and you have strong feelings or affection for them. So this word smitten, I am smitten with you, we would use in a romantic situation. 

The next one, I like this one. You’re my sunshine. Okay, so this you can use in all contexts. It just means I love you very much. So if something is sunny, we associate sun or sunshine with positivity and a nice situation. So if you tell someone like your child, you’re my sunshine, then there’s actually a song about that. So this is another way to express love to your family, friends or to your partner. 

Okay, the next one, I love you deeply. So this is another, normally it would be romantic, but it could also be to your family, I love you deeply. If you love someone deeply, it means very, very much. Okay, so that could apply to most contexts. 

Okay, this one, the next one is romantic only: I’m head over heels for you. So if you remember when we talked about falling in love with someone. To be head over heels, as well. So your heel is a part of your foot. It kind of means that you’re, again, falling, you’re kind of out of sorts because you love this person. So much. Okay, but you would only use it for a romantic context. I’m head over heels for you. 

And finally, number 10: You mean so much to me. So this one we can also use in all contexts because people mean different things to you like some your romantic partner has one meaning, your family has another one. So in this case, you mean so much to me, it means you are very important for me, and I love you very much.
