National Volunteer Week (NVW) recognizes the work of volunteers and encourages others to get involved.
In Canada and the United States, NVW is from April 18 to 24 this year; other countries celebrate on different dates.
Did you know?
Check out these North American statistics to truly understand the importance of volunteers:
- About 43% of people are volunteers
- Volunteer work is worth $167 billion a year in the U.S. and $56 billion in Canada
- In total, volunteers contribute 2 billion hours of service every year.
Getting involved (at a distance)
There are usually thousands of volunteer projects and special events planned during NVW.
Since last year, however—COVID-19 has put a stop to that!
Well, there are still plenty of things you can do to help.
Here are some ideas to celebrate volunteers and help your community!
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
Give recognition
Do you know an awesome volunteer? Write them an email or mention them on social media to thank them for their work!
Raise awareness
If you have a favourite volunteer organization, promote them on social media. The extra “likes” and “shares” could help them get support and donations!
Help a neighbour
Your elderly neighbours might need your help. Consider getting their groceries or other supplies. Even simply chatting on the phone could brighten their day!
Donate
Donations are always needed! Here are some suggestions:
- Donate food or money to your local food bank.
- Give blood at the blood bank.
- Sew some face masks for neighbours or local organizations.
Virtual events
Everyone needs something to do while they’re stuck at home. Think about organizing a virtual event: Teach a guitar class, organize a children’s storytime, or lead an exercise class—all from your living room!
Keep it up
Volunteers are needed all year long. Even if you can’t participate during National Volunteer Week, any day is a good day to help out!
