Why, when

We use why to ask about causes and purposes. The structure is why + to do/to be + subject + verb + object:
Why is Kristin sad?
Why do you ask so many questions?
Why does Alex arrive late?
Why are you running?
Why is mom cutting vegetables?

We answer why questions with a reason, usually we use because or so. We often re-state the question when we answer:
Kristin is sad because her dog is sick.
I ask a lot of questions so you can learn more!
Alex is late because he has a tough job.
I am running because a bear is chasing me!
Mom is cutting vegetables so she can make a vegetarian meal.

We use because and so as conjunctions when we talk about the reason for something. Because/so connects the action to the cause.

We can see the structure of the first part is subject + verbs + object as normal.

We use when to ask about time. The structure is when + to do/to be + subject + verb:
When is the concert?
When do you wake up?
When do I need to arrive?
When are the fireworks?
When does Beth leave the office?

We answer when questions with subject + verb + object as normal. We often describe a time and use pronouns in our answers:
It is at eight o’clock.
I wake up at seven a.m.
You need to arrive before five thirty.
The fireworks are at eleven p.m.
She leaves at four o’clock.
