Grammar
Could/couldn’t
Could is the past form of the modal verb can. We use it in the past simple to make requests in a more formal context.
Remember that, as it’s a modal verb, we use the same form for all persons. For example:
I could finish my homework on time yesterday.
She could walk when she was 1.
To form the negative, we don’t need an auxiliary. We simply add not after could or use its contracted form couldn’t. For example:
He couldn’t speak French one year ago.
They couldn’t go to the concert.
To form the interrogative, we simply move could before the subject. For example:
Could you come to my office at 12 p.m.?
Could we join you later?
This song sounds good, but was a litle difficult to me.
