Grammar
Past simple (irregular verbs)
Some verbs are irregular in the past simple form. This means they do not end in -ed, as many past simple verbs do.
There is no rule about these verbs: all we can do is memorize them, although you may find some patterns that will help.
Students often make flash cards or make sentences with these verbs to remember them well. Here are some common examples:
No change from base form:
cost = cost
set = set
quit = quit
shut = shut
put = put
Finish in a d or t sound:
lose = lost
sleep = slept
keep = kept
send = sent
meet = met
lead = led
hear = heard
There is a vowel change:
win = won
run = ran
write = wrote
forget = forgot
Complete change of word:
be = (I, he, she, it) was / (you, they, we) were
take = took
go = went
have = had
