Grammar

Have to/must (affirmative)

We use must and have to to talk about obligations.

The structure is subject + must/have to + verb:
I have to brush my teeth every night.
Elizabeth
has to finish the report today.
Kendall and Daesha
have to clean the house before the party starts.
He
has to score now, or his team will lose the match!
She
must remember to study for her test.
They
must go now.
I
must remember to return this book to the library.

These examples show that have to changes form (has, have), but must is a modal and does not change.

Must and have to are similar. Have to is more conversational and general, and must is more formal and specific.

When we use have to/must with you, we create a very strong suggestion, almost an imperative (command or order):
You must not forget my mother’s birthday!
You
have to walk the dog!

In these examples, we tell a person that they are obligated to do something.

We can also use this structure to give very strong advice:
You have to be more careful!
You
must pay attention in this class!
