Grammar

Demonstrative pronouns

We use demonstrative pronouns to refer to specific things. The four demonstrative pronouns are this, that, these, and those. This and that refer to singular nouns; these and those refer to plural nouns.

This and these refer to something close to the speaker:
This is a nice dress.
Whose shoes are
these?

That and those refer for something more distant:
What is that?
Those tickets are expensive.

We use this to introduce people, or to start a conversation on the phone:
This is my friend Kevin.
Good morning,
this is John.

We use that to refer to something a person said previously:
I don’t agree with that.
That is a good plan.

We can use this, that, these, and those with nouns. This, that, these, and those help us to specify things we are referring to. Remember, this and these refer to something close to the speaker, while that and those refer for something more distant:
She lives on this street.
Aiden eats
these muffins for breakfast every morning.
Do I use
that desk?
Do you need
those pencils?
