Past simple – negative

  • We use the PAST SIMPLE NEGATIVE to talk about actions in the past. The structure is SUBJECT+DID+NOT/N’T+BASIC VERB.

“Randy didn’t play softball in college.”
“Mr. Bart didn’t teach his class well.”
“You did not prepare the documents I needed.”
“I did not sleep well last night.”
“We didn’t read that book in high school.”
“The workers didn’t come last Monday.”
  • “…I didn’t come”

We often use the full “not” (instead of “-n’t”) in this case to reject or deny an idea someone presents:

A: “You played badly in the game today.”
B: “I did not play badly!”

When we emphasize not, we make the listener focus on its role in the sentence.
