Grammar
Can/can’t
Can is a modal verb that we use to express ability, possibility and permission in the present tense. For example:
She can speak English fluently. (Ability)
John and you can come anytime you want. (Possibility)
Can I go to Mary’s party on Saturday? (Permission)
Like all modal verbs, can doesn’t need an auxiliary to form the negative or interrogative.
To form the interrogative we just need to add not after can (or its contracted form can’t). For example:
They can not play guitar.
They can’t play guitar.
Subject + can not, can’t + verb + object
To create interrogatives, we just need to move the verb can before the subject. For example:
Can we stay with you today?
Can’t they join us for lunch?
Can + subject + verb + object?
