Grammar
Want/Would like
WANT and WOULD LIKE are both VERBS that use the VERB+INFINITIVE form. WANT and WOULD LIKE have the same meaning (a desire for something), but WOULD LIKE is more polite and formal.
WOULD LIKE is also sometimes used for impossible or unrealistic things.
“I want to hike in Nepal!”
“We would like to have a party on the beach.”
“She would like to call her mother more frequently.”
“He’d like a bigger apartment.”
“Jimmy wants to be a doctor when he grows up.”
-We can also use WANT/WOULD LIKE with the pattern VERB+NOUN+INFINITIVE. We often use this structure to talk about what we want other people to do, be, or have.
“Nick wants you to finish this task for him.”
“I want my children to be successful.”
“Kobe would like his wife to exercise with him in the morning.”
“He’d like you to give to his charity.”
“We just want you to be happy.”
“Emma wants my wife to go with her to Mexico.”
