Improve your listening and writing skills by filling in the blanks of the song lyrics. We propose today Pink Floyd’s beautiful classic Wish You Were Here. The band broke up many years ago, but members of the band continue to play their themes. David Gilmour, who was lead singer and guitarrist in the band and composed this song with Roger Waters, offers in this concert a fanstastic acoustic version of Wish You Were Here. The phrase wish you were here is typically written while on holidays to people who are not with you. But it also has the literal meaning: you miss the person who is no longer with you…

Grammar – Subjunctive Mood

  • The subjunctive mood is used to express a hypothetical situation.

    The structure is:

Verb of advice or suggestion + (that) + base form of the verb

Common verbs in the subjunctive are wish, ask, demand, require, insist, and recommend. The verb “to be” in the subjunctive mood is always “were” in the past for all persons. “That” can be omitted.

    For example:
    I wish you were here.
He suggests that they study hard.
We insist she come with us.
