Grammar – Subjunctive Mood
- The subjunctive mood is used to express a hypothetical situation.
The structure is:
Verb of advice or suggestion + (that) + base form of the verb
Common verbs in the subjunctive are wish, ask, demand, require, insist, and recommend. The verb “to be” in the subjunctive mood is always “were” in the past for all persons. “That” can be omitted.
For example:
I wish you were here.
He suggests that they study hard.
We insist she come with us.
