Grammar – Connectors And/But/So
- In English we use AND/BUT/SO to connect words (or phrases) to each other. In formal speech and writing, we do not start a sentence with AND/BUT/SO.
- We use AND to give more information or add something:
- – “She has a bicycle and a car.”
- – “Andy goes to the restaurant every Friday and always orders the same meal.”
- – “I like vanilla and chocolate ice cream.”
- We use OR to give alternatives:
- – “We can go to the beach or we can to to the mountains.”
- – “Do you want strawberry or vanilla ice cream?”
- We use BUT to give different, contrary, or unexpected information:
- – “They want to go but they can’t.”
- – “I like to play sports but I do not have a favorite team.”
- – “The dress is beautiful but expensive.”
