Grammar – Past Simple

Past Simple- regular verbs (affirmative)
- We consider past simple REGULAR VERBS those that add -ed to the base form of the verb. For example:
- – dance – danced
- – kiss – kissed
- – visit – visited
- There are a few exceptions to this rule:
- – When the verb finishes with an -e, we just add -d. For example: like – liked, close – closed.
- – When the verb finishes in consonant + y, we lose the y and add -ied. For example: study – studied, marry – married.
- – When the verb finishes with a stressed vowel + consonant, we double the consonant and add -ed: stop – stopped, ban – banned.
Irregular Verbs:
- Group 1: All 3 forms of the verbs are identical. For example:
- cost – cost – cost
- let – let – let
- put – put – put
- Group 2: The 2nd and 3rd forms of the verb are the same. For example:
- teach – taught – taught
- tell – told – told
- understand – understood – understood
- have – had – had
- Group 3: All 3 forms of the verbs are different. For example:
- drive – drove – driven
- write – wrote – written
- break – broke – broken
- speak – spoke – spoken
- Finally, here’s a list of the most common verbs in English that you should remember:
- say – said – said
- make – made – made
- go – went – gone
- take – took – taken
- come – came – come
- see – saw – seen
- know – knew – known
- give – gave – given
- think – thought – thought
- get – got – got (gotten in American English)
