Improve your listening and writing skills by filling in the blanks of the song lyrics. This week is dedicated to Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) so we are proposing songs related to space. Today we bring you Starman by the remarkable artist and musician David Bowie (who sadly passed away in 2016). Bowie was notorious, among other things, for his outlandish clothes, which he asked famous designers to make especially for him. For the tour that included Starman, Bowie wore the striped bodysuit, designed by Kansai Yamamoto, that you see in the video. The song speaks about an alien, Starman, who is in the sky and wants to visit us on Earth but is afraid to, in case we “blow our minds“. Enjoy!

Grammar – Want & Would Like

Want & Would Like
- WANT and WOULD LIKE are both VERBS that use the VERB+INFINITIVE form.
- WANT and WOULD LIKE have the same meaning (a desire for something), but WOULD LIKE is more polite and formal.
- – “He’d like to come and meet us.”
- – “They would prefer to arrive later.”
- – “I’d never do that to you.”
- WOULD LIKE is also sometimes used for impossible or unrealistic things:
- – “I want to hike in Nepal!”
- – “We would like to have a party on the beach.”
- – “She would like to call her mother more frequently.”
- – “He’d like a bigger apartment.”
- – “Jimmy wants to be a doctor when he grows up.”
- We can also use WANT/WOULD LIKE with the pattern VERB+NOUN+INFINITIVE. We often use this structure to talk about what we want other people to do, be, or have.
- – “Nick wants you to finish this task for him.”
- – “I want my children to be successful.”
- – “Kobe would like his wife to exercise with him in the morning.”
- – “He’d like you to give to his charity.”
- – “We just want you to be happy.”
- – “Emma wants my wife to go with her to Mexico.”
This song is very good! In Brazil we have the version called “O Astronauta de Mármore”.
