Past Continuous
- We use the PAST CONTINUOUS to talk about actions in progress in the past. The PAST CONTINUOUS shows that the action occured over a period of time and gives emphasis to this.
- We make the PAST CONTINUOUS AFFIRMATIVE with SUBJECT+WAS/WERE+VERB+ING.
- – (lyrics) “Love was changing the minds of pretenders.” “Our souls were singing.”
- – “Ricardo was studying for two hours.”
- – “The workers were moving boxes all day.”
- – “I was sleeping when the alarm sounded.”
- The last example shows a common use of the PAST CONTINUOUS.
- We can use the PAST CONTINUOUS+PAST SIMPLE to show that the PAST SIMPLE VERB interrupted PAST CONTINUOUS VERB action:
- – “Leia was cooking breakfast when the fire started.”
- – “My parents were driving in the rain when the accident happened.”
- – “I was going to school when I slipped on the ice.”
