Improve your listening and writing skills by filling in the blanks of the song lyrics. Today we propose the soft and beautiful song No Surprises by the British alternative rock band Radiohead. The video features songwriter Thom Yorke singing inside a diving helmet as it fills with water. Some people interpret that the lyrics refer to a man who is drowning due to his way of life, which is mainly based on working very hard in order to have material things. A possible metaphor of our modern society?

Relative Clauses
- We use RELATIVE CLAUSES to add information about something.
- We make RELATIVE CLAUSES with RELATIVE PRONOUNS:
- that, which, where, when, whose, who/whom.
- These clauses can idenfity or tell us more about the NOUN placed beofre the RELATIVE CLAUSE.
- – “A job that slowly kills you.” (song lyrics)
- – “The man who lives in that apartment was arrested yesterday.”
- – “The movie that we watched last weekend was too scary for me!”
- – “This island, which is home to many celebrities, is a closely-guarded secret among travel agents.”
- – “My son, who has worked as a doctor for twenty-five years, is retiring soon.”
- – “The cars that are available to rent are very modern and very expensive.”
- RELATIVE CLAUSES also help us communicate without repeating the same information.
- – “Emily’s bike, which she bought last week, has already been stolen.”
- We can use a RELATIVE CLAUSE to shorten the idea: “Emily bought a bike last week. Emily’s bike has been stolen.”
