Improve your listening and writing skills by filling in the blanks of the song lyrics. Today is International Rock ‘n’ Roll Day, so we propose what is possibly the most iconic song about this type of music. Our lyrics lesson today is by the longest-standing rock group, the Rolling Stones, and their emblematic tribute to rock music: It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I like It). The video is a funny performance of a very young Rolling Stones band, all of them dressed as sailor boys. Released in 1974, this oldie is without doubt an eternal rock classic. Is there anyone who has never heard it before? Note: it is not an easy song so we recommend it for Advanced students.

Second Conditional
- We use the SECOND CONDITIONAL to talk about unreal situations in the PRESENT or FUTURE. We often use this structure with unlikely or hypothetical situations.
- We use the structure IF+SUBJECT+PAST SIMPLE; SUBJECT+WOULD+VERB.
- We can also exchange the “if” and “would” clauses:
- – “If we were rich, we would travel the world.”
- – “If Sam was smarter, he would own the company by now.”
- – “You would help me if I needed you.”
- – “Elizabeth and Francis would make us work harder if they were the managers.”
- – “If I was baking a cake, I would burn it.”
- We make this structure NEGATIVE when we place NOT between IF and the SUBJECT, WOULD and the SUBJECT, or in BOTH PLACES:
- – “If you weren’t short, you would be a basketball star.”
- – “If Rachel wasn’t kind, she wouldn’t have so many friends.”
- – “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t care about you.”
- – “We would own a home if the bank didn’t deny our loan application.”
- We make this structure INTERROGATIVE when we place WOULD+SUBJECT+PAST SIMPLE; IF+SUBJECT+VERB.
- We use this structure to ask questions about unreal or unlikely situations:
- – “Would they help us if we needed them?”
- – “Would everyone escape this building if it was burning?”
- – “Would Tristan have married Rachel if he hadn’t met Macy instead?”
- – “If you were an animal, would you be a bear?”
- – “If I was sick, would you visit me in the hospital?”

There is incorrect at the begining or they mispronounced strange but i think there ought to be insane instead strange. I wish i listened some hip hop music next time 🙂
Thank you for the hip hop recommendation.
That’s an amazing song, I like it!
I’m so glad you like it 🙂
Pronunciation quite complicated, but I think is the best way to force yourself of leaning English.
That is very true, Martin.
Wow, I like the „Stones“, since I was a little boy (….next to the Beatles ). Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rhythm ‘n’ Blues at its best 👍
My first open air concert, which I attended, was a concert with The Rolling Stones on June 19th, 1976. You see, I am a somewhat older student….😊. I still love the band to this day.
That sounds great. Thanks for sharing.
It’s only rock & roll. Ou yeaaaah!
