Today’s exercise is based on a moving song, I Was Here, by the super-star artist Beyoncé. The song became part of Beyoncé’s fourth album, released in 2011, the year marking the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. The lyrics of I Was Here are about being remembered for having lived your life in full, for having touched the hearts of the people you love and for leaving a positive mark before you leave this world. It is a reminder of how valuable life is and how we should make the most of it.
Beyoncé performed this song at the United Nations headquarters in New York in 2012 as part of the global launch of World Humanitarian Day. Ban Ki-Moon, then Secretary-General of the UN, said in the introduction to her performance: “Tonight Beyoncé brings more than her stunning talents; she brings inspiration to help another person, to help another human being.”
