This November we are celebrating World Hello Day. Today’s lyrics are from Grammy award-winning singer, Adele. In this song, Hello, she is reaching out to somebody in her past after a long time.
The song was on her critically acclaimed album, 25. Many people felt that the title of the song was perfect considering it was her first musical release after a three-year break. Enjoy!

Modal Verbs of Deduction
- We can use some MODALS to make deductions (educated guesses) and reject information. We can use MUST, CAN’T, COULD, MAY, and MIGHT in this way. MUST and CAN’T when we are very sure and MAY/MIGHT/COULD when we are not so sure, but want to talk about a possibility:
“Tiffany isn’t answering her phone. She must be in class.”
(we are confident the reason Tiffany isn’t answering is that she is in class.)
“This can’t be Aaron’s car. His is yellow and more modern.”
(we are confident the car is not Aaron’s)
“Tiffany isn’t answering her phone. She could be in class.”
(we think it is possible that Tiffany isn’t answering because she is in class, but we are not sure)
“That might be Aaron’s car. I have only ever seen it from a distance.” (it is possible that the car is Aaron’s, but we feel doubtful about it)
“You may be feeling sick because of last night’s dinner.”
(we are making a guess about why the person feels sick)
Remember, MODALS are always followed by the infinitive of the VERB without “to:” (“to be” -> “be” ; “to have” -> “have”)
