Today we propose a beautiful song by the British artist Sting. He was the lead vocalist and songwriter for the very popular rock band Police, before he launched his solo career in 1985. The song Englishman in New York is from his second solo album released in 1987. Sting is also an actor and a human rights activist.

The song Englishman in New York describes the distinguishing characteristics of just that, a man who has moved from his native England to New York City.  Sting is known for being one of the finest lyricists of his generation, and these lyrics are a great example of his prowess as a song writer.

Subordinating Conjunctions

  • Some CONJUNCTIONS (or connectors) have more than one word. We often use these CONJUNCTIONS to set a condition for an action to happen, or not.
  • They include: as soon as, as long as, except that, no matter what, provided that, so as to, and in order that:
  • “No matter what they say, be yourself.” or “Be yourself, no matter what they say.”
  • “As soon as you arrive, I will be ready to go.” or “I will be ready to go as soon as you arrive.”
  • “Except that there’s traffic, we’ll arrive on time to the concert.” or “We’ll arrive on time to the concert except that there’s traffic.”
  • We can see that we can place these CONJUNCTIONS in the beginning or middle of a phrase.
  • “No matter what happens, I’ll be sure to finish my project.”
  • “As long as we have lunch first, I’ll play basketball with you.”
  • “I will help you with your homework as long as you help me clean my room.”
  • “Ellen’s mother will pay her debt, provided that Ellen graduates from college.”
  • “Provided that Aaron fixes my car, I will pay him what I owe him.”
  • “We need to buy ingredients in order to have something to cook.”
  • “So as to teach the lesson, I need access to a computer.”
