Still today, their music is known and sung around the world. They greatly influenced music, culture and society and they did all this in only one decade, the 1960’s, when they were together as the Beatles. The degree of their lasting impact is demonstrated by the fact that their legacy continues today. They shaped music forever and everyone speaks of John, Paul, George and Ringo on a first-name basis, as if we knew them personally.
They were also incredibly innovative. Some examples:
- The Beatles invented “the recording band.” They were the first band to give up performing live public concerts in order to simply record songs in the studio.
- They were the first to use sports stadiums as performing venues.
- They invented the idea of running their own record label, Apple Records.
- They invented the concept album, with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
- They invented the music video, making short, stand-alone, dedicated films of a single song, especially the ones they made for Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane.
- They were the first to print the lyrics of all the songs on the actual album cover, beginning with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Don’t Let Me Down is a love song composed by John Lennon. It is written to Yoko Ono, expressing how he feels in love for the first time, openly showing his vulnerability and begging her not to disappoint him, “don’t let me down.” It is considered to be one of Lennon’s best late-Beatles songs, together with Come Together. Enjoy!
