Chocolate Cake is a song by the Australian band Crowded House. This alternative rock band began in the mid 1980’s and is still giving concerts around the world. The song Chocolate Cake was released in 1991 and is fairly obscure. The song criticizes aspects of society’s values at that time, mentioning many famous names. For example, Tammy Bakker, who was then a well-known American singer, evangelist and TV hostess. One of the song’s lines refers to “the excess of fat on your American bones“, which was thought to be particularly offensive in the USA.

CAN is a modal verb that we use to express ability, possibility and permission in the present tense.
For example:
– She can speak English fluently. (Ability)
– John and you can come anytime you want. (Possibility)
– Can I go to Mary’s party on Saturday? (Permission)
Like all modal verbs, can doesn’t need an auxiliary to form the NEGATIVE or INTERROGATIVE. To form the interrogative we just need to add NOT after can (or its contracted form CAN’T).
For example:
Subject + can not / can’t + verb + object
– They can not play guitar.
– They can’t play guitar.
To create interrogatives, we just need to move the verb CAN before the subject.
For example:
Can + subject + verb + object?
– Can we stay with you today?
– Can’t they join us for lunch?
