Productivity Special! We continue today with another top song that extremely successful people have in their playlists. Beast of Burden by the Rolling Stones is a classic rock song, the music genre considered to enhance productivity most in the workplace (recent survey conducted by music provider CloudSound).
Though Beast of Burden was released in 1978, there is still today a lot of speculation about the meaning of the lyrics. A “beast of burden” is a domesticated animal that labours for the benefit of man, such as an ox or horse. So the song seems to be about a man singing to his woman that he doesn’t want to be her ‘working animal’.
However, the writers of the song, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, both denied that it referred to a woman. Rather, Richards implied that it was referring to Jagger: during the years that Keith Richards had a serious drug addiction, Mick Jagger was upholding the band. In Keith’s words “When I returned to the fold after closing down the laboratory [referring to his drug problems], I came back into the studio with Mick… to say, ‘Thanks, man, for shouldering the burden’.” Whatever the meaning, the song has a great beat!
