Tap all the highlighted words in the transcript below to see their definition. ⇩Grandparents are the backbone of society.
They’re the keepers of traditions. They’re the connection to our cultures. And many are the providers of a lot of wisdom.
Honouring our most vulnerable
Grandparents (all seniors, in fact) are also very vulnerable right now. They’ve been facing high risks from COVID-19. From extreme loneliness to increased chances of a severe infection, seniors have been hit the hardest.
During this devastating time, these valuable members of society must not be disregarded or forgotten. It’s time to remember everything grandparents do!
Sharing life lessons
Grandparents are well qualified to share some instructions for life. We can learn a lot by listening to their words or observing their actions.
My own grandfather ate handfuls of pistachio nuts straight from his pocket. He collected items his neighbours had thrown out because they were “still good.” He poured black coffee on his cereal if there wasn’t any milk. He even gathered worms from his garden to throw at my sister and me!
I learned a terrific lesson from my funny, unique grandfather, which I’ve carried through my life: Just be yourself.
Read on for more advice from some wise elders!
Be willing to try anything.
Even if you try something and don’t like it, you’ll end up with some life experience and a good story to tell!
Love and respect yourself.
If you don’t treat yourself with love or respect, how can you expect anyone else to?
Do your best.
It can be tempting to give up when you feel like you’re not good enough. But if you try your absolute best, that’s enough!
You’re only as old as you feel.
Age is just a number. Take care of your mind and body, and don’t worry about your age!
Never stop learning.
There will never be a time when you’ve learned everything. Discovering new things keeps your mind sharp and makes life interesting!
Eat clean.
If you can’t pronounce the ingredients on a package, should you really eat what’s inside? Choose simple, whole, clean foods and your body will thank you.
Lessons to live by
Not everyone gets to have a grandparent in their life. If you’ve had the good fortune to have one (or more), you’ve probably learned a thing or two. What has your best lesson been?
